The gorgeous weather this week helped our crew make incredible progress in the landscaping and we were able to finish the entire front of the house project! I love the new grassy lawn where the old tent patio once stood, the clean look of the plants around the front of the house, the newly laid harringbone pattern walkway and trimmed up box woods! But I especially love where they removed the boxwood bushes blocking the front view of the house and moved “Virginia” front and center.
For those of you who may not know, West Manor was built in 1823 by architect Thomas Poindexter, who also built the original St. Stephen’s church on Perrowville Road. Thomas lived at what was actually called “Waverly” with his wife and 3 daughters Sallie, Margaret, and Virginia. Upon Thomas’ death Mrs. Poindexter married Rev. Robert Thomson, who used some of his wife’s funds to start the first Lynchburg College here in Lynchburg. Margaret was married at Waverly as was her sister Sallie, who married on May 21, 1868 to Capt. Thomas West, a Confederate veteran. They later moved into the main house that we currently refer to as “West Manor.” Virginia, the only Poindexter daughter not to marry, is honored with a statue that once stood close to the house, but now is front and center as guests approach to greet them and look over our weddings.
I have been longing for the opportunity to do real “before” and “after” photos and here they are! Enjoy!!

A special thanks to Rosser Landscaping who worked extremely hard to make sure every inch of the front lawn turned out perfect! You might also notice our shiny new copper drains put in to match our copper roof by W.A Lynch Roofing. Their hard work combined with the vision of our new owners for a grander front entrance has resulted in a fantastic new front lawn sure to captivate guests as they arrive for our events.
